Lechaim, to jobs and to life.

So today I was reading this book about a veterinarian and his experiences. I am now going to quote something profound he says about his job from the book: "I closed my eyes and grinned at the ridiculous thought that I had been conductig a diagnostic investigation for tuberculosis back there. A strange way to carry out a scientific procedure; a strange way, in fact, to earn a living. But then I might have been in an office with the windows tight shut against the petrol fumes and the traffic noise, the desk light shining on the columns of figures. . . Lazily I opened my eyes again and watched a cloud shadow riding over the face of the green hill across the valley. No, no . . . I wasn't complaining." (-James Herriot, All Creatures Great and Small, pg. 44). I loved this because, here is a guy doing large animal veterinary work, which isn't the easiest thing in the world, and he just laughs at his strange work. But then he admits that he wouldn't rather be any place different, because he loves his work, and he could be doing a job that sounds dull and boring, working in a stuffy office cubicle. Yes, he admits, he has a great job. I hope that when I'm a vet, I feel the same way about my job, or just whatever I do in life, I hope I enjoy it, and realize that, things could be a lot worse. As Ben Folds says "I'm really not complaining, I realize it's just a job, And I hate hearing belly-aching rockstars wine and sob. 'Cause I could be bussing tables, I could well be pumpin' gas, But I get paid much finer, For playing piano . . ." (sorry I didn't finish the rhyme, but it swears there and you get the picture anyway). We aren't all going to have the greatest, easiest, funnest job ever, but we all will have pretty awesome, good jobs that we can be happy with. Here's to enjoying normal jobs, and to life! Lechaim (pronounced luh-hi-eem) to life!
